This rare pair of 20th-century French garden aviaries is crafted in painted iron with tall, lightly tapering bodies, domed tops, slender finials, and elegant four-legged stands joined by sweeping curved stretchers with a small central decorative drop. Each is encircled by a decorative pierced frieze beneath the dome and fitted with a large arched door closing with a small iron latch. They feature a superb outdoor patina: layers of worn and scaled paint, oxidation, and traces of lichen have given the surfaces remarkable depth and character. One aviary is more heavily weathered than the other, resulting in a subtly different coloration. The interiors show more pronounced wear from exposure, entirely in keeping with their long life outdoors.
Their design draws on the tradition of ornamental European garden furniture of the late 19th century, with airy ironwork and graceful proportions that give them architectural presence without visual heaviness. The survival of two matching examples is particularly appealing: displayed together, their elongated proportions and delicate linear ironwork create a strong sense of rhythm, while the differences in patina give each its own character. Placed on either side of a garden entrance, terrace, or conservatory doorway, they would create an elegant sense of balance and architectural presence, while their weathered surfaces bring a more romantic, poetic character. Indoors or in an orangery, they also invite imaginative reuse as sculptural plant stands, with trailing plants, branches, or collections of natural objects playing against the open ironwork.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
