This pair of large faux-bois jardinières in concrete, French, early to mid-20th century, is modeled as rustic tree stumps with thick flat rims and pronounced knots and branch scars in high relief. The cylindrical forms are hand-sculpted with naturalistic bark texture, and the surfaces display mottled shades of stone grey and warm taupe, with traces of old limewash and garden patina. Presenting as a true pair and of uncommon scale, they are nicely weathered, with scattered chips to the rims and edges, minor losses to the bark modeling, and areas of moss growth that enhance their timeworn charm.
Rooted in the French tradition of "faux bois" and "rocaille", such pieces developed in the late 19th century, when artisans worked in concrete and ferro-cement to imitate natural timber for parks, orangeries, and terraces. Linked to the innovations of Joseph Monier, these planters reflect the period’s fascination with picturesque, nature-inspired ornament that remained popular across France well into the interwar years. Their generous proportions were designed to hold specimen trees or formal topiary, marrying sturdiness with a romantic woodland aesthetic.
Perfect for framing an entry, they are a striking set as a pair with olive trees or citrus tubs, anchoring a gravel terrace or poolside court. On a veranda or in a conservatory, they lend texture and gravitas beside wrought-iron seating or glazed jars. In a contemporary setting, their sculptural bark relief provides organic contrast to clean architectural lines, while their fanciful imitation of nature introduces a whimsical, almost playful elegance that enlivens both traditional and modern landscapes.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
